Beshear to deliver State of Commonwealth address tonight

January 6, 2010

Gov. Steve Beshear will offer his State of the Commonwealth address tonight to a joint session of the House and Senate.

Gov. Steve Beshear

The speech begins at 6 p.m. EST, and can be viewed live on KET, or streaming online.

It will be interesting to see how Beshear plays this speech, his third since taking office. Beshear has remained noncommittal about his intentions regarding pushing a slots bill, but his emphasis on the size of the budget shortfall appears to be directed in part at showing the need for expanded gambling revenues.

Another budget buster for the state – state employee pension funding – has been looming over this talk about the budget, but there has been little talk about working to trim back what the state spends on retirement benefits each year, even though that will be a large part of the budget picture.

In his first two State of the Commonwealth addresses, Beshear has shied away from unveiling any broad, bold proposals or delving into specific solutions for the state’s problems. We’ll see if that changes tonight.

House Speaker Greg Stumbo and Senate President David Williams have scheduled a joint press conference following the address.

Be sure to tune in, and I’ll post a copy of the address once its available.
